"OUCH!"
August 11, 2014

A cake made for an "Ouch" challenge. For me, one of the worst things about hand sewing and beading is jabbing my finger with the needle -- OUCH! The spool of thread (cake) is 5 inches in diameter and the needle and beads are all edible. This was my first go at making my own impression molds and using isomalt.

"Dorothy"
October 20, 2013

This was a cake challenge my friends gave me, and the theme was "Dorothy".

Dorothy is a Greek name which means "God's gift" So I have a Greek vase with the images of the god Poseidon giving gifts to Dorothy, the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Lion. The other side has Dorothy, Toto and the Good and bad witches. The vase is red velvet cake with buttercream and fondant. The patterns are designs I drew up and had printed on edible paper. Stands about a foot tall.

Remembering when...
May 26, 2013

A few of my friends gave me a Hobbit cake challenge. They were expecting a Hobbit hole, but I wanted to include several aspects of the film and have BIlbo be the main focus with many of the things he loves. The chair and the stool are cake, covered in fondant with gumpaste "wood" pieces. Bilbo is modelling chocolate and fondant. The accessories are printed edible paper (which show various other characters and maps from the film), gumpaste and/or fondant. EVen the floor is covered with fondant tiles. This cake was a challenge in more ways than one and boy, did I learn a lot of new things.

"The Nothing to do Fairy"
June 20, 2012

I made this piece for my doll clubs "favourite illustration" challenge. I was inspired by an illustration by Linda Ravenscroft. So instead of making it from paperclay, I made an edible piece. The fairy is sculpted from modelling chocolate and has gumpaste clothes and hair. Her feathers and wings are made from edible paper, painted with food colouring. The small mushrooms are made from gumpaste and the top of the large mushroom is cake. The piece stands 13 inches in height.

The Nutcracker
December 14, 2011

I decided to make my challenge piece out of cake for my doll club's Christmas "On the Stage" challenge. The figure stands 17 inches tall and is covered in fondant, with cotton candy hair. The body, head and hat were carved from cake, and the arms are solid fondant. It was my first cake to use a "fancy" support structure this narrow and tall. The little blue cake was made from left over cake that didn't make it into the nutcracker.
